WELCOME!!
Welcome to samples of my writing showcasing “Eye-locks and Other Fearsome Things.” “Eye-locks” is a Bipolar/Asperger’s memoir in narrative form that describes the triumph of love over mental illness. While not a lesson plan it documents my therapeutic journey to finding love against all odds. Useful for therapists, and for patients with Bipolar Disorder and/or Asperger’s Syndrome. A scholarly, autobiographical case history of my story was the showcase article in vopl. 13 no. 1 of Psychoanalytic Inquiry in 1993.
For the full length narrative non-fictional account click http://www.independentauthornetwork.com/ellen-stockdale-wolfe.html for a short bio, a full description, and to purchase my book.
About MOONSIDE…
Learning to love is an ongoing process and I am writing posts on new lessons learned.
All the original abstract painting is posted to advocate for Bipolar Disorder and Asperger’s Syndrome– for it is those very handicaps that feed my art. The more realistic nature art is dedicated to raising consciousness for animals and the environment. All other art work is purely for your enjoyment.
Finally I have also posted selections from my nature writing and poetry. My nature essays were published in a small paper in upstate New York for a year and a half. The poems have appeared throughout my life, coming and going as they please.

Hi there, Ellen. I gave your book a shout-out on my blog today. A week ago I downloaded it to my kindle and I am about 1/2-way through reading it. It’s a good story and well-written. I like the way you’ve woven a tale of your life around mental illness. I imagine that was not an easy job — to put things in a readable order but you have managed to do it. My kindle says I’m 46% into the book and I’m glad I haven’t gotten near the end because when I enjoy a book I don’t want it to end!
I have dozens of journals and I wish I could organize them into a book that explained my journey but the memories are so raw and personal, I just don’t know if I could break it down into a succinctly told story that explains what it has been like living and learning with depression. Your book has inspired me to perhaps save my journals and one day give it a try. I don’t know if this link will be active but it is from my blog and about the feelings I have regarding my journals. http://mydepressionchronicles.wordpress.com/2012/06/22/good-bye-to-my-past-47

Dear, dear Kathy,
Thank you so much, Kathy!! You have no idea what this means to me! I am still sick and still in a bad valley of depression. This award picked me up when I was thinking to stop writing, like you felt. Right now, I have to concentrate on getting well to host people and don’t see how I am going to. It is a very important occasion– hubbie’s 60th and it is just a couple we are having but it is going to take all I have to do this. Maybe like you I could postpone the acceptance and fulfillment. I don’t have 15 people but will see what I can do. Thank you ever so much, Kathy. And I am glad you called me a “new friend” because that is how I think of you.
Love,
Ellen

It’s truly my pleasure, Ellen, to pass this along to you!! I, too, received the award when I was so low, so I understand how much it can help. I had to take my time to post, so please don’t feel any pressure from me on when you write about it. And there’s no way I could do 15, but I did what I could.
I’ll keep you in my prayers as always, but ask God to give you the extra strength you need for hubbie’s celebration!! 🙂
Love,
Kathy

Dear Kevin,
I am very honored and humbled that you would give me this award. I am afraid I have to decline though. I am just keeping my head above water with Christmas and a family crisis involving one of my two remaining relatives, a beloved aunt. I do Christmas in a big way and it always takes its toll on me, both physically and emotionally. I am treading on thin ice and I am just waiting for the crash. A hard time of year even though I do love it– or used to. Don’t get me wrong, I am tremendously grateful to have my beloved hubby and my life however it is right now. I have many blessings.
I do hope you understand and I am extremely honored that you thought of me for the award however ironic it is, me, with my tenuous grasp on reality.
Thank you, dear, dear Kevin, God bless you, Ellen

This is such a wonderful dedication to individuals with BPD and Asperger’s syndrome. My brother has Asperger’s and he was misdiagnosed for so long. He’s suffered a lot because of that. I’m glad to hear such a lovely person is advocating for people like my brother. I love this.

And I have tried to be the best friend possible and understand what he lives with. I have gone to sites and read about this. I also worked as a therapist in mental health with long term mental health patients.
I admire your desire to be strong and positive. That always makes a difference and is the first step to any sefl help.
I appreciate you visitng my site as well. I shall continue to visit with you. I love learning and making new friends.

Although I think you very deserving certainly, I did not give this award to you, in fact did not know there was such an award. So someone else deserves the credit. Thank you anyhow and congratulations on the award. As I say, you surely deserve it. Have you ever thought of doing a cookbook?

How nice!! I hope you won’t be disappointed and hope that it might help you. You can learn to live with mental illness, especially with a loving husband, which you are so blessed to have, as am I. It is an unusual story. But so is yours. Can’t wait to read about your life with your husband in India and I wish much, much happiness. But being down sometimes even in wedded bliss is okay, too. I read how you are going to pursue a branch of pharmacology which I am unfamiliar with but is your passion. Go for it!!! A job you love is important, second to finding the man you love!

I should also add…
I know what you are saying… I received a torrent of abuse from people all over the world about my mental illness!! It is so sad and in the future I would really like to think of a way to explain to ignorrant people how mental illness (or homosexuality) is not something to be ashamed of.
It is really sad. You are SO brave for sharing you story… any friends which turned away from you were not true friends so it is best if they are not around you anyway.
I hope you are well beautiful Ellen!!

You did??? I am so sorry– that must have been tough. Another memoir writer who wrote about his Bipolar Disorder told me that he expected to get rejection from some friends. He did but he said he grossly underestimated how much rejection he faced. Thanks for saying I was brave. You are brave, too. I am sorry you experienced that abuse!! And you are right about my friends, of course. True friends are very rare anyhow. I lost my best friend 30 years ago and she is irreplaceable. But now I have my lovely husband who works with the mentally ill everyday– the poor mentally ill that no one else helps. So, like you, I am very blessed with a wonderful husband. I just wish he loved Bollywood movies.
