Aching in the Moonlight
Alright
But a full moon
The super moon
Wakes me at 3
Like an alarm
I married a Wolfe
Perhaps I am to howl
But I love the silence
In which I can hear
The ear sounds
Of my nervous system
Like a sea shell

This is intense and evocative Ellen. How can I say I empathise? In truth I can’t possibly do so; and yet still I feel some residue of pain transmitted through these words. At the same time, there is a serenity – I too ‘love the silence’ – which perhaps acts as a balm upon the emotions, as does the moon of course, the beautiful, shared orb of light.

You do empathise, Hariod. You do. Thank you for your lovely note! xx ellen Yes, the quiet is a balm. Definitely. And the moon, well, what can I say?

Beautifully written expression of pain. Migraines are the worst.

Thanks so much, Kitt. I have them all the time– think they can be comorbid with Bipolar. BTW, your new picture and hairdo(?) are very attractive!

Thank you. I had it bobbed, but since I do not blow dry my hair, it does not usually look like that (I just came back from the stylist).
Yes, actually there’s quite a long list of migraine comobidities, which, forgive me, I’m listing here (my son has suffered from migraines since he was a toddler).
“The comorbid illnesses in patients with migraine include stroke, sub-clinical vascular brain lesions, coronary heart disease, hypertension, patent foramen ovale, psychiatric diseases (depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, panic disorder, and suicide), restless legs syndrome, epilepsy and asthma.” (“Comorbidities of Migraine;” Shuu-Jiun Wang, Ping-Kun Chen and Jong-Ling Fuh; Front Neurol. 2010; 1: 16)

Oh, thanks for informing me. I suspected a link. Sorry for your son. Is he on medication for them?

Yes, he takes Elavil since that is the only prophylaxis approved for pediatric use. His psychiatrist is weaning him off the Elavil. I am hoping that he will outgrow the migraines as his father, my husband, has. The women in the family continue to get severe migraines, but my husband experienced less severe migraines once he went through puberty. Our son gets offended when my husband says he has a migraine because my husband’s symptoms are so much less severe than our son’s. When my son was a toddler we thought that his symptoms were of stomach flu until my sister observed a pattern. He gets overwhelmed by social stimuli, actually by many kinds of stimuli. He has come a long way over the years but still feels more pain than anyone should.

Oh, I am sorry he suffers so much. I do hope he will outgrow them. Have you tried food-grade ginger oil for the nausea?

No, we have ginger growing in our back yard and that did not help (the dogs eat it when then need it). He responds best to antiemetics.

Yeah, I am on an old antipsychotic that has antiemetic effects, thank God! I hope he will outgrow them.

Migraine killing every time I had it, but to think or compose a poem while in pain? Wow, that’s amazing.

Hi, thank you for writing. Actually the poem was written after. During a migraine pretty unproductive. Sorry you have them, too!

Ellen, you write so poignantly that I can almost feel the pain myself. The only good thing about a headache is how good one feels when it’s gone.

Thank you, Wendy, for your good wishes. Migraines are a trip. More than just a headache. But maybe you know yourself. Anyhow, thank you so much!

I get sinus headaches accompanied by nausea and night sweats. Pain medications and I don’t get along so I have to wait it out. Thankfully it rarely happens more than once every few months. It’s the one time I head to bed in the middle of the day. ❀

Sounds like no fun at all! Have to head for bed myself but really try not to. Am getting migraines more than 3x a week now. Only allowed to take the meds 2x a week so…
