TRIUMPH OF SPIRIT IN LOVE, NATURE & ART

“Conversing with God”

The Entity

… actually a full moon in a summer nighttime sky

I thirst for the taste of Divine Love again that I seem to remember having as a child. I yearn to get acquainted with God. As an adult, “getting to know” God as a person never occurred to me. I was too busy with supplicatory prayer– a one-way conversation and, as such, not a conversation at all. Or I prayed prayers of Thanksgiving but never enough for all I was given. Yes, childhood prayers were better but they are long gone.

Sister Draupadi of Paramahansa Yogananda’s Self Realization Fellowship first introduced me to the idea “of getting to know God” in her talk on “Prayer is a Conversation with God”. I listened to her talk a few times. I prayed a lot but my prayer life entailed prayers for the hardships of life, protecting people, praying for “good” outcomes… I never thought to become acquainted with, if I may say, the “personhood” of God. Yes, I said prayers about his attributes but never said, as Sister Draupadi suggests we say, “I want to know all about you, God” or words to that effect.

Yogananda says God is shy. Quite a few times I have looked deeply into the eyes of my psychiatric social worker husband who is very shy and on the Spectrum and thought I saw God in him for a flicker of a moment. They were profound experiences, gone in a few seconds. Yogananda says God wants our love but He wants us to give it freely.

I must think deeply about this.

  1. Godly experiences may be a flickering moment, but they change us forever. And they often come in discreet ways and in common things and people if we are open to them. Cherishing your words here, dear Ellen. They are certainly a divine invitation to deeper conversation with God. Thank you, my friend! Sending you light and blessings, always! ✨🙏

  2. Dear Ellen, thank you for this beautiful reflection. Your thoughts about prayer as a conversation with God really spoke to me. I find myself longing for that same closeness with Him, beyond simply bringing my requests. Thank you for giving me something to ponder upon. 💙

    • Dear Dee,
I am so glad my post “spoke” to you, just as Sister Draupad’s talk spoke to me. I hope we can both find a way to talk to God in a deeper way!Thank you for your visit! 🩵Ellen

  4. Perhaps God is shy because we don’t recognize our God essence. We don’t feel that we are deservering of harboring God within. Because if God created everything and is everywhere why don’t we recognize ourselves? So shy…

    • Interesting idea, Cheyenne. Perhaps that is the reason. I really don’t know. But God as shy seems right. Wanting us to freely love him. Thank you for your thoughts.

  6. I recently attended group meetings about prayer hosted by my church. After you pray, remain silent and listen. God may communicate through Scripture, other people, or situations. The Holy Spirit helps you connect. I speak to God throughout the day, asking Him questions, thanking Him, etc. Sometimes His answers pop right into my head. God bless you, Ellen! 🙂

    • Thank you for the wonderful “tips”, Nancy. God has spoken to me through other people and situations but I have never tried to get to know God in a personal way. I will follow your advice. Thank you for sharing what you do. God bless, Ellen!
