    • Not anymore… we are in New York City but we used to live in Millbrook. Do you know it? We miss it but are striving for a simpler life. How are you doing? Have missed hearing from you. xxellen

  4. The simplicity of Life is the Art. Not all of us can follow this way.

  6. I do agree those little pleasures and treasures in life we all appreciate are more easily revealed – and enjoyed – in a less complex existence.

    • Yes, I saw that as a child when I lived with my immigrant peasant Sicilian grandparents for periods of time. I was very happy there with them and it was a very simple life.

  7. I see the tendency in me and so many others to pack our lives full with activities and stuff and clutter, which is in and of itself stress-filled. You’re right–simplicity is a lifetime journey of awareness.

    • I find it a constant battle to simplify things. But getting rid of all the possessions with my husband’s great aunt’s apartment and my mother’s taught me valuable lessons. But Tom and I have too much stuff and there is the constant temptation to buy. We are practically hermits though so, in that sense, we have simplified things. Still it is a constant battle. My Sicilian grandparents taught me to live simply. And as a child, I was happiest at their apartment. Grandpa was an immigrant and came here with nothing so he taught me a lot!!

      • I have a dear friend who lives in central Italy who says her surroundings and the people in her neighborhood have all helped her to learn what it means to simplify. Your grandpa gave you a great gift. Our culture creates unnecessary need. I love your perspective.

      • Yes, it is so hard to resist all the constant bombardments of ads, people, etc. And, yes, Grandpa and Grandma did give me a great gift but it is a constant battle not to get sucked in to all that surrounds us. And I have not succeeded in living as simply as they did.

  9. This photo has such a warm cheerful feeling to it, Ellen. I am trying to simplify my life right now but it is hard, especially with all of the technology and the constant change of it. This is a good reminder to keep at it though. 😊

    • Yes, Julie, it is hard to simplify things in today’s world but it can be done to some degree at least. I am trying to pare down things but, as you say, it is hard. We live in a consumer society and are constantly bombarded with things from every direction.
