10 Things to Say to a Mother With Mental Illness (The Scarlet “M”), by Doreen Bench
They really are 10 great things to say to anyone with a mental illness. I would add my husband’s statement to me: “That must be very hard for you.”

Dark poetry
Since I have several mental/emotional illnesses and have fought breast cancer I have to say I get REALLY tired of those of us with mental/emotional health issues being compared to those of us who have, who are, who were fighting cancer. Everywhere I go to read a blog or almost anything else on the net to do with mental/emotional health I find at least one reference by every single person comparing mental/emotional health to cancer. One has nothing to do with the other!!
If those who are trying to compare the two by pointing out the difference in stigma for one versus the other would spend more time in creating things to bring awareness to mental/emotional health issues, maybe we’d be rid of the stigma sooner. If you’re angry that people have walks for cancer or any other illness, find out how to start a walk-a-thon for your specific mental/emotional illness. If you’re not well enough to do so, get someone who loves you to start one. Just PLEASE stop comparing every mental/emotional health issue to cancer. They are not the same. It doesn’t do a bit of good to stop the stigma. Nothing is gained. To use an old phrase, it’s like comparing apples and oranges. It’s useless.
I’m sorry, Ellen, but this is a sore spot for me. I do not mean to upset you with my remarks and I hope you won’t be upset. If you want to delete this comment you have my blessing to do so. I will not be offended. This is simply how I feel since I have endured, persevered and lived through all of this with God’s help. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and this is mine because of my experiences.
Thank you, Ellen!! The rest of the post was really good and I thank you for re-blogging it!! 🙂

Of course, you of all people should speak out. I just thought the ten things to say were good and wish more people would say them to those of us with mental illness.

Thank you, Ellen!! 😉
Yes, they were good. I know people who care and want to say something but don’t know what to say will benefit from this post.
