Eye-Locks, Namaste and God

Namaste!
Namaskar!
Namaskaram!
The Hindu greeting: “I bow to the God in you.”
I love this form of greeting– so much better than a handshake.
Christians believe God dwells within our souls. Perhaps other religions do as well. It seems Hindus do also if that is not too simplistic of me to express. Please excuse me if it is.
In some of the best of the old Bollywood classics love is portrayed without so much as a simple kiss. It is shown by gazing into the eyes of the beloved and saying “I see God in you.”
Eyes are the window to the soul. For people such as my husband and myself who are on the Autism Spectrum, eye contact is fearsome. It is threatening. And yet eye contact is precious beyond all fortune. Eye contact in love is wondrous and life-changing.
I have seen God in my husband’s eyes for a fleeting moment of eye contact on a walk in the countryside when we were being loving with one another… and on precious contact when I come in to talk to him while he is on the computer in New York City. I have seen God in my husband when he is telling a joke and I am laughing at him and he is so happy to make me laugh. He is child like, God like. It seems I hit the jackpot in marrying him. Looking deeply into another’s eyes, the “right” other, one finds God is Love, God is Joy. This is nothing new– just new to me.
One time I looked deeply into another’s eyes with a person I worked with long before I met my husband. It reached down deep inside both of us and it changed my life forever. It led me on a road to a complete breakdown and a long road back rebuilding my personality slowly in therapy until I was whole. And then I met my husband. And eye-contact with him is precious. It is special. Not frequent and in its rarity, powerful and sacred.
Eye-locks are powerful, potent conveyors of love, joy, sadness and finally, and most importantly, they can be a vehicle to God.

Welcome to samples of my writing showcasing “Eye-locks and Other Fearsome Things.” “Eye-locks” is a Bipolar/Asperger’s memoir in narrative form that describes the triumph of love over mental illness.

Being a hindu, i loved the intro, and it makes my heart smile when i read about such beautiful people, deeply in love❤️. Eye contact is really a magical thing, and seeing god in your beloved is a sign of real intense emotions (that’s what i feel). Loved reading it. 💕

Eye contact is so beautiful and memorable–it connects us much more clearly than simple words. It draws us into each other’s hearts. Beautifully written.

You are welcome :). I’ll share something else that meant a lot to me — my oldest daughter met her a few months ago (they did not know each other before because I live in South America, away from my family of origin, as a missionary). They really connected and hung out all evening having a long talk about my cousin’s interests. She is brilliant and my daughter loved everything she had to share. It just meant so much to me that they could connect in a meaningful way like that, having seen my cousin struggle to make connections. I wish I could put into words how blessed my heart felt.

To catch the sight of autistic person is really difficult. However, when it happens it looks like you dive in their world.
I am saying that form my experience to communicate with my grandson.
Ellen, your vision of Love through the eyes is really special. I’ve never read or heard about this kind of Love description. Thank you!

Alexander, thank you so much for your most kind comment. I hope you can communicate and enjoy your grandson. I worked with autistic children briefly when I was very young. It is very challenging and there is a world of feeling inside sort of trapped. And thank you so much for your comment on my vision of love. You have no idea what that means to me. It is a combination of what I learned from my Sicilian grandfather and from my attraction to Indian culture. Thank YOU!

Thank you, Ellen.
My experience with autistic children communication showing that the only thing which helps to have close contact is Love. For this kind of people it’s more important than for usual ones.🙏

Yes, you have found the key, though love is hard for Auties and Aspies is hard to accept. We have to learn to accept simple things like hugs. But, i think it is the only thing that will save children like your grandchild. 🙏🏽

Wow now I am looking at expressions of love through the eyes completely differently. It’s like doing a visual mindfulness moment with a loved one. I love this framing.

Thank you, Nichelle. The eyes are the doors to the soul and, once in awhile, I can see inside the other and feel the soul/God/the Divine. Wish it could always be that way but perhaps, with time and right states of mind, it could happen more often. Thank you, Michelle, glad to find you in the blogosphere.
