TRIUMPH OF SPIRIT IN LOVE, NATURE & ART

Poetry

My Former Life

P1120102

In my former life I was a bee.

Why else would I keep sticking my nose

into the private, pollinated parts of flowers?

In my former life I was a turtle.

Why else would I hunch my shoulders

into a seeming shell, my back a carapace

to shield me from a sometimes dangerous world?

In my former life I loved thee.

How else could I account for my “knowing” you

from before the first time we met,

for “seeing” the you in your inner depths?

Some would say  I risk damnation

for a belief in reincarnation.

Yet this answer satisfies me on so many levels

and requities my thirst, quieting my myriad of questions

that the old belief system did not.

Unpopular in the west,

woven into the fabric of life in the east

in which I clothe myself,  sewn by a strong affinity,

a strange familiarity,

attraction mystifies.

Most of us cannot remember

the details of the other lives,

and are left with fractured fragments of the past

glistening like sea glass in our hands, on the seashores of our minds,

trying to piece together a picture

of a previous existence.

Love is timeless and mysterious

and though I dread the inevitable,

the loss of our life together

in this life,

I know we will be together again in the next and the next

ad infinitium

for something as sacrosanct as our love

is eternal.

Welcome to samples of my work in various art forms showcasing “Eye-locks and Other Fearsome Things.”  “Eye-locks” is a Bipolar/Asperger’s memoir in narrative form that describes the triumph of love over mental illness.

Starbursts

Starlike

explosions of blue

with an

out of season

dusting of snow

a foretaste

of  the approach of winter

a sugary confection

one is tempted to ingest

a similar temptation

(I suppose)

as those tempted by coca.

Instinct vs. Love

“Instinct”

they say condescendingly

but it is not.

“Anthroprophism”

they argue

but it is not.

Science now knows

animals show altruism,

animals show love,

elephants, dogs, dolphins…

“Love” they say reverently for man

but it is and is not

Science now knows

hormones course through our bodies,

Oxytocin they say,

I say how clinical,

a dissection of love

   for man

and

 animals.

The Consciousness Stream

WP_20130818_13_56_38_Cinemagraph

Look carefully below

to see the stream flowing

in between the tangle of greens

and the landscape of rocks

*

Look carefully within

to hear the whispers of God

in between the jangle of loud thoughts

and the overgrowth of emotions

*

Heaven lies in the quiet

trickling like a stream

through the spaces of the silence

Abandonata

DSCN1478

Abandoned by life

choked by overgrowth of unkempt green

once upon a time

breathing, seething with energy

steaming with the hot breath of cattle

teaming with the tenuous tenure of life

*

Your body long gone

your loving heart now ashes

your caring now a memory

which nothing can erase

and time cannot erode.

*

How I long for thee

though a mere thin veil

separates your spirit from me

small comfort

when I miss thee mightily.

The Intimate Intruder

Je suis tres intime

I am very intimate

with the flowers

and fear I am intruding

into their secret

world of silent sensuality

visited by bees and butterflies

and other tiny creatures

seduced by their siren song

of quiet sexuality

seductive to all

who pause to peek

inside their blooms

The Backyard Circus

Did you ever stop to think

what it is like

to hang mid-air from a leaf’s edge

P1110973 copy

or to glide along a leaf

blowing in the breeze–

or crawl upside down

upon veined slopes of green?

O

or to give’s one’s all

to a loved one

stories high from the ground

hanging onto her for love

and dear life?

*

Such feats go on all day long,

ignored by you–

our talents unacknowledged–

because we are lowly creatures in your eyes

and yet we can do

acrobatic feats

you cannot even approximate.

*

Did you ever stop to think?

A Secret Love

My husband’s look of love scares me,

turns off all emotion,
rendering intimacy hysteria for me
and forces a series of dogged pursuits by my Husband

whom I adore more than life itself.

Can’t turn off the flashbacks
loved Grandpa so
but not enough to do some hanky panky

that even as a child I knew to be wrong.

Bad enough the little sex games we did
when I was REALLY little and knew nothing of right or wrong,
just a fun game we played
till caught by Auntie who pronounced us both “disgusting”!
Why I never knew.
My fear that Grandma was jealous just made her laugh,
“Silly girl” to think such things.
What was there to be jealous of
between a little girl and her older husband?
What indeed!
What a deed!
She told me years later
he never was unfaithful

in all fifty years of marriage
“Ha!” I thought but never said,
“what he did with me
was that not infidelity?”

“You do the hanky panky

and you turn yourself around

and that’s what it’s all about.”

I remember that lewd smile even today.
Will it take me to my dying day to forget?
Oh how I loved him…
Taking me for after dinner walks
to catch fireflies,

silently sitting at the window together
at night after dinner,
watching the neighbors below,

Grandma in the kitchen,
Just him and me
a quiet bond between us,
or telling me bedtime stories of his youth.

My fault–
I was the seductress,
dancing in a hula skirt for him,
with tennis balls tucked into my aunt’s bra for breasts,
Hula dancing
to his songs he played on the mandolin.
Oh how I loved him!
No one knew.
I forgot about the “thing” between us till decades later,
when a friend talked about her incestuous abuse.

Oh how he loved me!
Arm around me always on the living room sofa
watching American Bandstand on the TV

giving me his whiskey-soaked cherry,
teaching me about art
making me the artist I am today.
Preaching the middle way to me

of relevance later, way later,
as it takes me a lifetime to learn the meaning of “I am Bipolar.”
Oh how I idolized him!
He carved the Lincoln Gettysburgh address, you know, in D.C, at the Lincoln Memorial
and many other illustrious statues.
He was a revered lawyer, working with veterans,
a self made man,
knowing no English
when he first came here
all alone at 16
and went to night school to learn English

while working as a sculptor
and then to law school.
He was a hero
helping poor veterans,
himself wounded in the war.
He was a hero
but no one knew

he was my hero.
“Of course he was having strokes,” my doc says.

“Maybe that explains the incest,” he says to me.
Men stick together
To defend the unspeakable
Which I just now speak out blasting loud and clear

in the blogosphere

for all to hear.

Naughty girl/old woman!
Just now allow myself the anger
while preserving the idolatry and Grandpa’s love

for such a love, and not irony this,

such a love is so VERY special!

The Night Light Show

131

Tiny, twinkling stars

suffering loneliness,

fall from the sky

and become fireflies,

flickering on and off

among the trees

calling for a mate,

lighting the night sky

and exciting vision

with twinkling

and flashing lights

and one is not sure

which is which

so bewitched are we

by the show of Light.

Flutterbies

P1060438_edited-1

Tread lightly

for  the wings of angels

flutter by our souls

as we plod on

in our own worlds

often unawares

of the Heaven inside us

because of the Hell of our thoughts.

Barn Window Reflections

P1110488 copy

We live in a dream world the  Hindus call “Maya”

 All is illusory–

a cosmic dream from which we will awaken

when we die.

Just as a baby may think

it is the “end”

of  life as he knew it

when he is being shuttled through the birth canal

while being born,

so, too, we may think it is the end

when we are dying

to this world of delusion.

But we will be born to something real,

something just beyond the veil of illusion

in which we are so enmeshed during this “life” as we know it.

“When we awaken in God we shall realize that mortal life is only a picture made of shadows and light, cast on a cosmic movie screen” ~ Paramahansa Yogananda

A Hug Without Arms

Horses & paintings 006 (2)

Do they think because

we have no arms

we do not hug?

Do they think because

we have smaller brains

we do not love?

*

We hug

neck to neck,

chest to chest,

coat to coat,

in a warm embrace

of pure love,

a love as pure

as theirs,

perhaps more so.

*

They think

we do not love

because it makes it easier

for them to drug us

for so-called sports,

for their so-called fun,

and race us past injury,

and, yes, they even kill us

for their gustatory pleasure.

*

All we want to do

is love our families

and run free.

But we are willing

to serve them

if they treat us right.

*

Now I ask you:

who here is superior?

“Life Goes On”

P1110888 copy copy

“Life Goes On”

*

That’s what Dad always said,

Remember, Tony?

My dear swarthy brother,

dark of skin,

warm of heart,

we shared the same hazel eyes,

a mix of Mom’s Sicilian brown

and Dad’s brilliant blue.

We lived separate lives,

you in Michigan,

me in New York,

you with three adopted children,

me, childless with Ko-ko and Tom.

You weren’t supposed to DIE!

You and I were to be

fellow way-farers

on the road through life.

We were to live parallel lives

and you were supposed to die

when you were old and feeble,

not middle-aged,

in a tortured death!

It wasn’t supposed to be like this.

*

“Life goes on.”

*

Today I light a candle

on my altar to you and Mom and Dad

and send you Reiki

like I did while you fought for your life

for two years

after a prognosis of two months.

My heart aches

on this second anniversary

of your death.

*

“Life goes on.”

*

Your wife, your children, and I

cry out for you

but you have moved on to some higher form.

You paid your karmic dues,

with your diagnosis, cancer.

Long before,

you always told me

not to worry,

that you’d live long because

only the good die young.

But you were too good

and you died far too young

and I live on in my little, reclusive life,

Ko-ko no longer here,

just me and Tom.

I should have been the one to go

but the good die young.

*

“And life goes on.”

The Leaf Devoured

P1110651_edited-1

Water droplets magnify

the verdant veins

 through which

the life giving  blood flows

through which

the life giving source

that keeps

giving life

 keeps

life going

despite the wear and tear

of an alien attack

by a catapulting caterpiller

that offers another creature

 a world within world

in which to live.

Despite

bitten tears,

bitter tears,

the leaf will live green

through the summer

and then shrivel to crimson,

life blood draining

and it will cry no more

as it drops dead

from the branch

where it lived

for a few short months.

Oh Dying Lily

P1110669_edited-1

Oh, Lily

in the valley

of despair,

the devil’s lair,

thou seemeth to be shy

with your glossy, glassy tears.

One day we all must die

and we all have fulsome fears

of dying.

It is not

for lack of trying

 your life to live;

it is not from sins of lying

or reluctance to give.

You lived your life purely,

always kneeling demurely,

and though your petals turn to crepe

your form still has a humble drape,

still praising He who made you

in your last living days

and inspiring us to follow suit

in your reverent ways.

The Light Beings

P1110518_edited-2

In the freshness of the forest

I like to think

there are beings of light

especially after a rain

dancing in the green scented air

some call them aberrations

of the digital age

but I think them not unlike

the perception

of fleeting flecks of light

seen against an empty sky

I marvelled at as a child

and was flatly told they were floaters on the eye

 floaters they are not

rather they speak to me still

decades later

in hushed whispers

of the mystifying mystery

of the air we breathe

and the light we see

everyday without thinking.

The Stealth Kiss

P1020784

Unseen by a background of fellow flowers

he rushed towards her purple petals

to plant the blossom of her bosom

with a kiss

when

blew a breeze

that steathily stole his kiss,

before she ever knew, sending it wafting

above the treetops to the forever fields of lost loves.

Ode to a Lily

Lily of the Valley (digital photo)

Oh gentle

Lily of the Valley,

bowed down in quiet prayer

 to your Creator,

your humility,

your simplicity

is your beauty.

 ~

How like the trees art thou

who, unlike you,

reach skywards,

while you kneel

with sensuous spirituality

in deference to the Almighty.

~

Oh beauteous

Lily of the Valley,

would that we all were like thee

in thy hushed humility.

“Music Magic”

Today

see

the Light

music often mania makes

is this mania

or

is it the catepillar

coming out of the chrysalis of depression

being Bipolar bears

cacophonic confusion

even after 6 decades

who cares

Cat Stevens

a gift to me

from my brother

post mortem

his legacy to me

because he loved him

and because I missed him

I listened

too late to share the love

 now

my gift to you

just listen and let

soul to soul transmission

effect

its music magic

culminating

in a crescendo

of

soul

Pure Allure

016 copy

Look into my eyes

that tell no lies,

do they not hypnotize?

And my swirling

coat of curls,

is that not your unfurling?

Simple and pure,

though quite demure

I am full of allure.

And although

pink of ear,

pink of nose and

pink of horn,

 I’m yellow-tagged

and thus

uncharacteristically,

undeniably,

 positively

forlorn.
